When Grandma Fatoum visits her family for Eid al-Adha, she shares a story from her own childhood with her grandchildren.
She recalls the day her family bought a lamb for the celebration. Young Fatoum is responsible for feeding and caring for it. Soon, the lamb becomes her best friend, following her everywhere and running alongside her.
When she overhears her mother and aunt talking about the lamb's sacrifice, she realises for the first time what awaits her friend. Determined to protect the lamb, she decides to hide it.
Feeling that her family does not understand her, Fatoum turns to her grandfather. He gently explains the meaning of the sacrifice and the importance of sharing with people in need. Fatoum understands, but understanding does not make the thought of losing her friend any less painful. Can they reach an agreement that will spare the lamb she loves?
There is something deeply familiar in Fatoum’s experience. In Algeria, for example, where families may buy their lambs well before Eid, some children can be seen walking them along the street day after day as though they were pets. After spending time feeding, caring for and playing with an animal, it is no surprise that affection grows.
What stands out most is the grandfather’s patience and affection. There is something quietly powerful in the way the author portrays a Muslim grandfather who, rather than simply asserting his authority, makes room for a child’s feelings and expresses his care through both words and actions.
The illustrations deepen the reader’s connection to Fatoum and her lamb. Playful and carefree, the animal remains unaware of what awaits it. Its innocence strengthens the reader’s empathy for the friend she wants to protect. The illustrations also contain subtle cultural details. Older family members hold a sebha (prayer beads), a familiar sight for those who grew up with grandparents who carried one wherever they went.
