A Pencil’s Dream in Rabi‘ al-Awwal offers a lively and imaginative way for children to discover the meaning surrounding a familiar celebration.

At the centre of the story is a pencil eager to discover its mission on the 12th of Rabiʿ al-Awwal, traditionally associated with the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Could its mission be to help write and share facts about the Prophet ﷺ on this special occasion?

Through this playful narrative, children are invited to participate, answer questions and discover more about the Prophet ﷺ.

What stands out is the way the book approaches learning. A celebration can be familiar to a child long before they fully understand the meaning surrounding it. Here, curiosity, humour and play become a way into that understanding, allowing knowledge and fun to sit naturally alongside one another.

Hanaa Medhat’s illustrations contribute to the atmosphere of celebration. Children gather in the street, where a television presenter interviews them, putting their knowledge to the test. The cultural grounding is in the details: the presenter’s clothes, the patterns on the boxes of sweets, their packaging, even the painted edges of the pavement. Together, these details give the story a setting that feels specific.

في قلب القصة قلم يتوق إلى اكتشاف مهمته في الثاني عشر من ربيع الأول، وهو اليوم المرتبط تقليدياً بمولد النّبيّ محمّد ﷺ. فهل تكون مهمته المساعدة في كتابة معلومات عن النّبيّ ﷺ ومشاركتها في هذه المناسبة المميزة؟
