Can You Find My Eid Presents? by A. M. Dassu, illustrated by Junissa Bianda.

Scholastic. 2024.

The Sounds of Eid or أصوات العيد by Mai Saleh Zaitoon, illustrated by Lara Al-Jannoun.

Al Salwa Publishers. 2024.

Two picture books. The same celebration. Two different ways of introducing Eid to children.

Can You Find My Eid Presents? immediately draws the eye with its joyful, vibrant cover. That same sense of colour and celebration continues throughout the book, making it warm and visually engaging for young readers.

At the centre of the story is Hana’s search for her Eid presents. It is a playful and relatable premise, particularly for children familiar with the excitement of receiving gifts. The search for presents drives much of the narrative, which gives less space for the wider traditions and meanings surrounding Eid.

It is towards the end of the book, when the family gathers, that we begin to see more of the celebration and its cultural context. The story ultimately moves to something more meaningful than presents, as Hana recognises the importance of being with her grandmother.

The Sounds of Eid or أصوات العيد takes a different approach.

Told through the voice of a young boy, the story begins the day before Eid and allows children to discover the occasion through a succession of experiences.

Receiving gifts is one of them, sitting alongside performing Zakat al-Fitr*, wearing new clothes, receiving pocket money, eating festive foods, calling and visiting relatives, and sending good wishes. These elements are not presented as a checklist of cultural practices. They emerge naturally through his experience of Eid.

Lara Al-Jannoun's finely detailed illustrations deepen that sense of immersion. There is so much to discover beyond the words, and the details give the celebration additional layers and a lived quality. Children are invited into the rhythms and sounds of the occasion.

There is no single Eid experience. Both books depict the joy and anticipation of Eid, making different choices about what children are invited to notice.

*Zakat al-Fitr is a charitable donation given by Muslims at the end of Ramadan to support people in need.

يلفت كتاب ?Can You Find My Eid Presents الأنظار منذ الوهلة الأولى بغلافه المبهج والنابض بالألوان.
